The history of the Auvergne dates back to the early Middle Ages, when it was a historic province in south central France. It was originally the feudal domain of the Counts of Auvergne. Auvergne was a province of France deriving its name from the Arverni , a Gallic tribe who once occupied the area, well known for its fierce resistance, led by Vercingetorix , to conquest by Julius Caesar and the late Roman Republic.
Christianized by Saint Austremoine , Auvergne was quite prosperous during the Roman period. After a short time under the Visigoths , it was conquered by the Franks in During the earlier medieval period , Auvergne was a county within the duchy of Aquitaine and as such part of the ” Angevin Empire ” until the 13th century. The Middle Ages, especially the 10th to 13th centuries, were a period of great development for Auvergne, with the building of famous abbeys and churches in a Romanesque style.

Seasonal variations in phytoplankton biomass and production were studied in and in the newly flooded Sep Reservoir France in relation to various physico-chemical environmental factors. No trophic upsurge occurred in the reservoir as has been found in most of the newly flooded reservoirs. Phytoplankton composition changed drastically from to , the latter year being characterized by a rarity of diatoms.
Areal euphotic chlorophyll a concentration and phytoplankton carbon biomass were typical of mesotrophic lakes in and of somewhat oligotrophic environments in In contrast, the primary production PP rates were similar in both years, indicating a change in the factors controlling phytoplankton populations from to The low PP compared with the algal biomass present in seemed to be related to the instability of the water column and the Z mix :Z eu ratio, whose negative effects on the phytoplankton community were apparently more pronounced in than in Orthophosphate concentrations, and their contribution to total phosphorus, remained low in but increased with time in In recent decades, large inputs of nutrients have accelerated the eutrophication of many freshwater and coastal marine environments, resulting in phytoplankton blooms and even disruption of the structure and functioning of some biological communities Smetacek et al.

Early human societies and their interactions with the natural world have been extensively explored in palaeoenvironmental studies across Central and Western Europe. Yet, despite an extensive body of scholarship, there is little consideration of the environmental impacts of proto-historic urbanisation. Typically palaeoenvironmental studies of Bronze and Iron Age societies discuss human impact in terms of woodland clearance, landscape openness and evidence for agriculture.
Although these features are clearly key indicators of human settlement, and characterise Neolithic and early to Middle Bronze Age impacts at Corent, they do not appear to represent defining features of a protohistoric urban environment. The Late Iron Age Gallic Oppidum of Corent is remarkable for the paucity of evidence for agriculture and strong representation of apophytes associated with disturbance. Increased floristic diversity — a phenomenon also observed in more recent urban environments — was also noted.
The same, although somewhat more pronounced, patterns are noted for the Late Bronze Age and hint at the possibility of a nascent urban area. High percentages of pollen from non-native trees such as Platanus , Castanea and Juglans in the late Bronze Age and Gallic period also suggest trade and cultural exchange, notably with the Mediterranean world. Indeed, these findings question the validity of applying Castanea and Juglans as absolute chronological markers of Romanisation.
